Which Melasma Treatments Work?

Hyperpigmentation, uncommon in men, plagues mostly women from the age of 20-50 years. Different factors have been associated with the emergence of melasma such as exposure to the sun, use of hormone-altering drugs, and changes in hormones during pregnancy. Unfortunately, the condition cannot be prevented though there are numerous ways of dealing with the situation. Treatments may involve mediation with about 2% hydroquinone, sunscreen, abrasion, use of lasers, and application of our skin lightening creams.

Which Treatments are Available at the Dermatologists Office?

At the doctors, you can access different medications such as laser therapy, exfoliation (chemical and mechanical) among others. Although, the results from these treatments are not satisfactory and don’t justify their pricy cost.

For chemical exfoliation, the doctor may recommend the use of glycolic acid in combination with hydroquinone of about 2%. In mechanical exfoliation, abrasive instruments are used to sand the top layers of the skin. Common materials used for removing the upper layer include aluminum oxide, fine diamonds, and sodium bicarbonate. The process is mainly used in wrinkle reduction, treating acne, and eliminating stretch marks.

However, the results are not as dramatic for melasma after one or two sessions since it only removes the top surface. Thus, patients don’t have an assurance that they will work.

Besides, sometimes abrasion techniques are too severe on sensitive skin leading to worsening of the symptoms of melasma. Furthermore, techniques such as the use of aluminum oxide are regarded as cosmetic and are not covered by medical insurance.

Will Lasers Improve the Symptoms of Melasma?

Lasers are not that effective, and results will not last. In some studies, the therapy has been proven to lack the ability to stop hyperpigmentation. Regardless if it is used alone or in combination with mechanical abrasion, lasers may promote the worsening of melasma.

Frequent treatments are required, and their effectiveness reduces with continuous use.  You should use the medications with caution, although dermatologists recommend them.

Are There Alternative Methods of Dealing with Melasma?

The most proven methods of dealing with the condition involve the use of the right skin lightening creams. Know that home-based products, will not work. You require the use of professionally formulated products with active components.

Most products contain hydroquinone, which can help or damage your skin. Experts recommend that you use chemical products with concentrations of hydroquinone below 2%. Even so, they should not be used for a long time. They can lead to the skin becoming pale. Some products have high concentrations of hydroquinone sometimes over 4%. You should avoid them entirely because of the risk involved with their use.
